Wow this week flew by! I cannot believe Thanksgiving is next week! We have been working very hard in room 113. Students completed and brought home their This is Me books. It was fun to hear the different things that they came up with that they like. We have continued to write in our journals. The students are doing a nice job thinking of the sounds they hear in words and getting them down on paper. We are encouraging "best guess spelling," using the sounds they hear. It is amazing to see all the differences in their writing from the beginning of the year. I hope you can keep their journals and see the growth by June!

We started talking about Thanksgiving and being thankful. We came up with a nice list of different things we are thankful for and are making thankful turkeys to decorate our classroom. We have learned some turkey poems and also created a class book of different things that we are thankful for. It will start circulating to homes today. Please share it with your child and send it back to school the next day. We are missing a few class books that we have not seen in a while. Please check your homes to see if you may have a Room 113 class book.

Today the school had an extra recess time with a dance party to celebrate that as a school students did a great job with the first two aspects of our SOARs motto: self-control and outstanding effort. Here are some friends showing off their dance moves!!Displaying IMG_0808.JPG

A few reminders....

-As a reminder next Wednesday will be a half day of school. Students will be riding the bus home that they take to school in the morning. A notice went home Thursday. Please fill it out and send it back as soon as possible. Everything else in folders can stay at home.

-Please send in the $10 to cover the cost of the Nutcracker field trip as soon as possible.

-Please practice at home with your child putting on their sweatshirts, hats, jackets, gloves, etc. It is a time saver when getting ready for recess and going home.

-December 1st we are scheduled for parent teacher conferences. This is adults only please. If the time that I sent home does not work for you please let me know. I am also available the week of the conferences before school and for a little while after school if that is more accommodating to your schedule. A phone conference is always an option as well if you cannot make it into the classroom.

Cloud show with Mr. Musselman

Today Mr. Musselman from the Burlington Science Center came in to talk to us about clouds! We have been talking about the weather and temperate every day during our calendar routine, so Mr. Musselman came in to talk to us about how clouds are formed and what they are! Ask your student how he made them and how you can do so at home too!

Veteran's Day Activities

On Wednesday, November 9th before Veteran's Day, we had a school wide assembly outside in front of the flag pole. We honored some Veterans that have connections to Francis Wyman School.

Later on in the afternoon we got together with our 4th grade buddies to write letters to a friend of mine who is currently stationed in Bahrain in the US Navy. We will finish the letters this week and I will send them off to Jimmy. We thank him for his service!

I cannot believe it is November! Time seems to be flying by!

We started off the week with our Halloween parade on Monday. It was fun to see the students in their costumes! I hope you had fun trick-or-treating Monday night. We had fun Monday afternoon with our 4th grade buddies 'reading in the dark.'

We completed the last of our Halloween projects this week, including a new class book Spooky:Who is This? We will try and guess who made themselves in the different costumes and then that book will be added to the cirulation of class books. We are missing a few books we have not seen in a while. If you have one at home, please send it back to school. Students also practiced and illustrated a few Halloween poems in their poetry notebooks.

We started a new individual innovation at the book table where students get to write about different things that they like. Students will use their "best guess spelling" to complete these books. We are encouraging them to write the sounds they hear in words.

October journals went home this week. Again, students use best guess spelling to complete the question in their journals. It is fun to save them all school year and see the improvement throughout the year!

We started our unit on American symbols by making our American flag on Tuesday. I hope you enjoyed the blog post with the students saying the Pledge of Allegiance in front of their handwork.

In math we have been working on topic 3, numbers to 10. Students continue to work hard counting and recording numbers. I encourage you to practice number formation at home! They have been working hard in school and it has been paying off! We are also continuing to do math choice-board during math. These centers are based off what the different unit are about. We have seen a lot of nice team work and examples of friendship during this time of the day.

A few reminders:

Tuesday, November 8 there will be No School for election day.
Thursday, November 10- No School Students
Friday, November 11- Veteran's Day, No School

5th grade student council is conducting a can goods fundraiser and a toothbrush fundraiser to help the Burlington food pantry. They are collecting in front of the office if you would like to send something in.

Conference schedules will go out sometime next week. Please review your time. If you need to reschedule please let me know. I am also available during the week before school and for a bit after school. A phone conference is always an option too if you cannot make it in to Francis Wyman.

Please practice with your child putting on his/her jacket, scarves, mittens etc. It is super helpful if they know how to turn sleeves inside out, zipper, and put on their jackets when it gets time for recess and dismissal.

Have a great weekend!!

American Symbols unit

We started our unit on American Symbols!
We worked together on Tuesday to create the American flag with thirteen stripes and fifty stars. The students even said the Pledge of Allegiance while they took their picture in front of their work!
